Elementary Physical Education
Physical Education is an essential component of the total educational experience for all elementary school age children. The grades K-5 physical education experience is designed to assist students developing an awareness of and appreciation for their movement potential.
Senate House Bill 610 requires 150 minutes each week of physical education for students in grades K-5 and requires at least 30 consecutive minutes of physical education on any day during which physical education instruction is conducted. Certified physical education teachers are responsible for the delivery of the curriculum in grades 1-5. Classroom teachers and other personnel as designated by the administration serve as additional resources for the 150 minute mandate. Content is taught through one, two and/or three week instructional units for each content topic. The duration of instructional units varies for each content topic based on individual student needs.
Grades K-12 Physical Education curricula and assessments standards based and grade level or course specific. Content knowledge assessments are administered to students enrolled all physical education courses. Physical fitness assessments are administered to students enrolled in grades 2 and 5. Formative motor skill and content assessments may also be administered throughout the school year as necessary for the purpose of curriculum focus, lesson plan development and to assist students in developing higher levels of movement competence.
The Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS) for Grade K-5 Physical Education includes but is not limited to: the development of movement skills, the development of physical fitness, an understanding and application of movement concepts and the development of positive attitudes and values about movement. The following are the concepts outlined by the Grades K-5 NGSSS: Aquatics, Assessment, Benefits of Physical Activity, Catching, Chasing, Fleeing & Dodging, Dribbling, Educational Dance, Educational Gymnastics, Fitness Assessment, Fitness Principles, Flexibility, Goal-setting, Health-Related Physical Fitness, Jumping & Landing, Lifestyle Behaviors, Locomotor Skills, Moderate and Vigorous Physical Activity, Movement Concepts & Patterns, Muscular Strength and Endurance, Nutrition, Physical Activity Opportunities, Goals and Preferences, Offense and Defense, Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety, Safety rules and procedures, Skill Applications, Striking with Body Parts, Striking with Implements, Striking with Long Handled Implements, Technology, Throwing and Warm-up and Cool-down. Sportsmanship & Responsible Behavior concepts: Cooperation, Respect, Conflict Resolution and Sportsmanship are integrated into all content areas.
