School History

  • Newsome High School was named in honor of Mr. Joe E. Newsome. Mr. Newsome was born, raised, and educated in Plant City. He attended the University of Florida where he earned a degree in Pharmacy and was the owner of Brown and Newsome Prescription Center until his retirement. Mr. Newsome was a member of the School Board of Hillsborough County for 24 years.

Joe E. Newsome High School opened its doors on August 6, 2003, when Mrs. Rebecca S. Fitzgerald, Newsome's first principal, welcomed one thousand students. Immediately, the students distinguished themselves by earning the state grade of "A" in the first year. From the beginning, students excelled in competitive sports, the arts, writing, and a variety of academic competitions. The growth in the community soon made it's mark on the new school, which has reached a capacity of 2871 students. The schoool is now under the leadership of Carla Bruning.
