Pizzo Elementary School on the southernmost corner of the USF Tampa campus, was named afer the late Hillsborough County historian Anthony P. Pizzo, popularly known as Tony. Born in 1912 to Italian parents, Ybor City native Tony Pizzo collected, wrote, and lectured on Tampa history until his death in 1994. He founded the Tampa Historical Society and served as the county's official historian.
Pizzo Elementary opened in the fall of 1998 and is located on the University of South Florida campus. The student population spans from PreK through 5th grade and includes several exceptional education programs. Influenced by USF, Pizzo's school colors are green and gold and our mascot is the bull. As a Professional Development School (PDS) Pizzo partners with the university to: prepare preservice teachers, provide continuous staff development of experienced professionals, and implement the research and development of practices that will lead to superior educational outcomes for children. Collaborative work between and among the School District of Hillsborough County, the University of South Florida, the Museum of Science and Industry and the staff of Pizzo Elementary is providing the best educational experiences for our students.
