School History

  • In 1957, James Monroe Junior High School was opened in South Tampa to serve the students in the area surrounding and including MacDill Air Force Base.

"Monroe was named after James Monroe, the 5th President of the United States, who was in office from March 4, 1817 to March 4, 1825. James Monroe served as president during a time when the United States was focused on domestic affairs. He helped the United States settle many boundary issues, including acquiring Florida in February of 1819. While president, five new states were admitted to the union: Mississippi, Illinois, Alabama, Maine, and Missouri.

Monroe was the first junior high in the district to convert to a middle school in 1991, and has undergone major renovations and improvements in 1994 and 2012.

During the 1990's, the middle school established a Junior ROTC program, and at that time Monroe was the only school in Florida with this program. Into the 2010's, Monroe started to shift focus towards technology and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) programs to help prepare students for their futures in a fast-paced world."
